EOD Suit Testing

Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Suits are used by bomb squads when disarming bombs. The purpose of the testing was to determine the level of protection that the suit offered against shock waves. A dummy was dressed with the suit. Pressure transducers were placed outside and inside the suit to determine the extent of the shock wave attenuation. Accelerometers were placed inside the dummy head to measure the extent of head injuries. A free field blast probe was also used to characterize the blast wave generated by the explosions. Due to commercial free field probes not being available in the time scales required for the testing a probe was developed in house. The dummy was then placed at various standoff distances from various size explosive charges to determine the level of protection.

The image above shows two suits being tested. One dummy is in the kneeling position and one is standing.
